Polaris is the largest supplier of Samarium metal in North America. Samarium is a rare earth metal with a bright silver luster. Although it is relatively stable in air, it eventually forms a grayish-yellow layer of oxidation. Samarium is commonly used with other rare earths in carbon-arc lighting. It is also used with Cobalt to make permanent magnets.
